Typing on a phone is an embodied skill. After thousands of messages, your thumbs know where each key is. You no longer look for letters: your hands type from muscle memory, and your conscious mind barely takes part.
This test measures how automatic that skill has become. The keyboard below looks like the one you use every day, but almost every key label is hidden, so you can't find letters by sight and can only rely on memory. The app records your speed, your accuracy and exactly where each tap lands, so your typing can be replayed and studied later.
How it works
The test has 2 passes. Each pass has 5 words, then 3 six-digit numbers. In pass 1 you hold your phone however is most comfortable. In pass 2 you type with only the thumb of your non-dominant hand. Each pass starts with a short instruction.
Tap Start. When a pass begins, a word appears at the top of the screen.
Type the word on the keyboard below. Most key labels are blank. Only the word's first letter and a few random keys are labelled.
What you type is hidden, so don't look for it. Keep going as you would normally.
If you feel you made a mistake, you can fix it with ⌫. When you think the word is done, tap Submit.
After the words, a number pad appears. Only 2 digits are labelled: the number's first digit and one other. Type the 6 digits the same way, then tap Submit.
After pass 1 you'll see a quick summary. Pass 2 uses the same words and numbers in a new order.
At the end, see how the two passes compare, then tap Share to send your recording to the researcher.
Type as naturally and quickly as you would in a message. Don't aim for perfection: mistakes are part of what's being measured. No personal or device information is collected, only the words, numbers and your taps.
